Duncan Jack, a member since 1994, died on the 17th October, 1998 of
a drug overdose.
A long time drink and drug abuser, Duncan got involved with the
company while he was resident at Ferry Cross, the drug rehab centre in
Norwich.
He was at that time completely clean, and, apart from being a Londoner
and having a dodgy past, was a good member of the cast of the original
production of Kett's rebellion.
After Kett, he performed in several more Crude Apache shows - Iris,
the Barney Mutton Story and Yet another Xmas Carol, Biggy Smalls,
Nature's Gentleman, the first Crude Apache Event, and A Midsummer
Night's Dream in 1997. By this time, however, he had resumed his drink
and drug habit, and had become increasingly less pleasant. In December
he turned up at the Yuletide Log, obviously out of his head and in a
bad way. Shortly afterwards, he moved to London where he remained,
living rough, until returning to Norwich shortly before his death.
He was 33, and is survived by his 2 children.
Russell J. Turner writes:
I worked with Duncan for over 2 months during the production ofMidsummer Night's Dream and found him a good cast man and a friendlybloke. I know that some people have had problems with Duncan. I neverdid. Whatever we may have thought of him, there is no doubt that upuntil the end of last year he was a whole-hearted Crude Apache man who got a lot of enjoyment out of working with us. It's just such a shame.
